Jason Sawyer joined Blodgett, Watts & Volk, P.C. of Counsel in January, 2003. Mr. Sawyer became a partner on January 1, 2006, and left the firm and to begin his own practice in November 2009. Prior to his association with the Blodgett, Watts & Volk, Mr. Sawyer practiced as an associate at Bradley and Riley, P.C. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1999 until 2001. From 2001 until 2002 he practiced law as a sole practitioner focusing primarily on criminal, juvenile, and indigent defense in Iowa City, Iowa. Mr. Sawyer is admitted in all Vermont State courts, the United States District Court for the District of Vermont, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the Supreme Court of the State of Iowa, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa.
Mr. Sawyer received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College in 1995 and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1999, graduating with distinction. He interned for then Shadow Foreign Minister, Ann Clwyd, M.P., in the House of Commons, London, England in 1994. Mr. Sawyer served as the President of the Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers for 2007/2008, is a member and Vermont State delegate to National College for DUI Defense, is a member of the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association, the Vermont Bar Association, and the Iowa State Bar Association. Mr. Sawyer is also a member of the CJA panel for the U.S District Court for the District of Vermont.
His practice focuses primarily on State and Federal criminal defense, and significantly on defending those accused of driving under the influence (DUI). In addition, he represents respondents in disciplinary matters in front of the Board of Professional Regulation.
Mr. Sawyer researched, briefed, orally argued, and won the published case of State v. Goldberg, with his then law partner Paul Volk, Esq. which overturned a judge’s issuance of a search warrant for want of probable cause. This decision ensures that law enforcement corroborate information provided by even known informants and ultimately protects the privacy rights of all Vermonters.
